Asaphoetid has a astringent bitter taste and a strong odor.
It is added as an ingredient in curries, salads and pickled vegetables and sauces.

In Ayurveda, asafoetide has long been used in medicine for anti-hysteria, paralysis, indigestion, impotence, cough, respiratory disease, for the prevention of infectious diseases, in case of acute runny nose, inhibits the production of gas in the gut.
