100% pure essential oil
Latin name: Amyris Balsamifera
Plant part used: tree and branches
Country of origin: Jamaica
Extraction method: steam distillation
Sandalwood Amyris essential oil is also known as West Indian Sandalwood Oil because of its scent reminiscent of sandalwood. It is obtained by steam distillation of the bark and branches of the Amyris balsamifera tree. Due to its high oil content, this wood burns itself like a candle and is therefore called the candle tree by the locals. It is a cheaper substitute for pure sandalwood.
When used in a diffuser or aroma lamp, the oil helps reduce anxiety, tension and insomnia. Its calming properties are said to help during meditation.
The botanical origin of the tree yielding this oil was not known until 1886, when microscopic examination of the leaves revealed the main differences between this plant and the true sandalwood. The Amyris balsamifera tree grows wild in Haiti. Due to their healing and aromatic properties, essential oils were considered more valuable than gold by ancient people.
The essential oil is not suitable for internal use.
