Lemon essential oil has a sharp fresh scent and is extracted from the fresh peel of the lemon fruit. This oil refreshes the mind and sharpens concentration, so it is often preferred in room fresheners in offices and banks. It strengthens the immune system and cleanses the body.
The oil elevates the mood and clears the mind. If you add a few drops to a bath or mix it into a massage oil, it relieves lack of energy, fatigue, depression and stress.
The lemon plant is native to India and was brought to Europe by the Crusaders in the Middle Ages. Because the fruit contains good amounts of vitamins A, B, and C, sailors were given an ounce a day to prevent scurvy, eye problems, and other vitamin deficiencies. The first real cultivation of lemons in Europe began in Genoa in the mid-fifteenth century. It was later introduced to America by Christopher Columbus. The Spanish conquests helped the lemon seed to spread further. Lemon was mainly used as a decoration and as a medicine. It was only much later that it began to be used in cooking.
Warnings: in its pure form, corrosive and irritating, in contact with the skin, allergies, skin burns and redness may occur. Do not use orally.
