Patchouli essential oil has a rich musky sweet spicy scent. The plant is native to Malaysia and India, where it is called "puchaput". The word patchouli is derived from the Tamil 'pachchai ilai', which simply means 'green leaf'. Patchouli oil is obtained from the young leaves, which are dried and fermented before steam distillation. This oil improves its aroma and strength with age. It is highly valued in skin care, especially in scar healing.

In Eastern countries, patchouli oil is used in poultices and sachets between linens and clothes for fragrance, as well as to prevent the entry of bugs and insects. The oil is said to have a balancing effect on the emotions and create a loving atmosphere. When used in an aroma lamp or diffuser, the oil reduces anxiety and depression.

Patchouli appears to have been placed between Indian cashmere scarves before shipping to Victorian England to protect the goods from moths. Without this scent of dried patchouli leaves, handkerchiefs could not be sold in England. In Europe and America, patchouli oil and incense were extremely popular in the 1960s and 70s among hippies, as the scent of patchouli covered body odor and the smell of burnt cannabis. Patchouli was used as a hair conditioner for dreadlocks.

The essential oil is not suitable for internal use. Do not use neat on the skin.
